Highlights of the SIU Prize Computer Science Season 1 Awards Ceremony

The SIU Prize Computer Science Season 1 Award Ceremony was held on January 11, 2025 to honor outstanding global Vietnamese and Vietnamese-origin Ph.D holders in the field of Computer Science.

In the inaugural season of 2023-2024, SIU Prize Computer Science has received more than 100 nominations from 19 countries and territories. Outstanding works are in a variety of fields: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Network and Information Security, Telecommunication Engineering, IoT, Bioinformatics… The nominations have gone through 3 rounds of rigorous evaluation implemented by the Preliminary Council, the Professional Committee, and the Professional Council, which consists of leading professors, scientists, and experts in related fields from prestigious universities, research institutes, and enterprises in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, and Vietnam.

On behalf of the SIU Prize Computer Science Professional Council, Prof. Nguyen Thanh Thuy shared his thoughts: “We hope that with the SIU Prize Computer Science awarded today, you will continue to research and develop your projects for a better Vietnam and a better world.

At the award ceremony, Mr. Le Quang Huy – Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee on Science, Technology and Environment congratulated all the laureates. He also emphasized long-term investment in people is always the core factor for the sustainable development of the country and humanity. In addition, Mr. Chairman highly appreciated the initiative to launch the SIU Prize with the mission “For Vietnamese intellectual excellent”.

Expressing her honor to attend the SIU Prize Computer Science Season 1 Award Ceremony, Prof. Alondra Nelson – Member of the National Science Board, Member of U.N. High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence, Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton congratulated the outstanding achievements of the laureates. She strongly believed that the laureates are the representatives of the bright future that Vietnam and the Vietnamese community around the world are aiming for.

The laureates embody the excellence of global Vietnamese youth in the field of IT and AI with excellent theses and many patents and solutions that are being and shall be applied in countries and high-tech corporations, demonstrating immense potential to pioneer breakthroughs in tackling critical challenges of the modern world, especially those in education, health and environment.

Dr. Tran Hoang Dung – Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, was honored with the SIU Prize Computer Science Gold Prize for his outstanding contributions in the field of learning-enabled cyber-physical systems. Sharing thoughts regarding the award, the Gold Prize recipient said: “The SIU Prize is not only a valuable recognition but also a great source of encouragement, motivating us to continue our efforts as well as our dedication to the scientific field that we pursue. In particular, this award has given us, young scientists from all over the world, the opportunity to meet, to exchange and to establish important premises for future cooperation.”

Dr. Pham Huu Dang Nhat, Assistant Professor, Cardiff University, Wales, UK received the SIU Computer Science Season 1 Bronze Prize

The Honorable Mentions were awarded to: Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tam for the thesis “Debunking Misinformation on the Web: Detection, Validation, and Visualisation”; Dr. Hua Cam Hao for the thesis “Toward Image Semantic Segmentation and Classification using Bracket-style Convolutional Neural Networks and Its Variants” and Dr. Vu Thai Ha for the thesis “Computational Approaches to Expand the Applications of Chromatin State Annotations”. The total value of each Honorable Mention is 400,000,000 VND in cash; SIU Prize silver medal; and a trip combining the award ceremony and international conference in Vietnam.

In addition to the above-mentioned categories, the inaugural season of SIU Prize Computer Science also awarded the “Spirit of Dong A” – a special award worth 100 million VND, honoring scientists who graduated with a doctorate from a Vietnamese university, and were ranked in the Top 10 of the award. The “Spirit of Dong A” seeks to reward and promote the spirit of self-reliance of domestic candidates.

At the award ceremony, the SIU Prize Organizing Committee also announced the launch of SIU Prize Health Sciences, with nominations starting in March 2025.

Activities within the award seek to celebrate Vietnamese intelligence and promote scientific creativity, thereby affirming Vietnam’s position on the international technology and research community. The award is the commitment of the Group of Asian International Education in establishing a global knowledge community, thereby, accompanying the sustainable development of humanity.

SIU Prize Week and Highlights

In addition to the award ceremony, SIU Prize Week 2025 has organized special activities to enhance the exchange of knowledge and the connection between scientific communities:

1. The conference “Law on Artificial Intelligence” on January 4, 2025

The event, organized by SIU in collaboration with the Institute of Law and Social Studies under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, focuses on solutions to improve policies and laws in the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

2. The conference “AI systems in Education and Smarthealth” on January 8, 2025

The conference was organized by SIU, seeking to establish a forum for academic exchange, knowledge sharing and promote applied scientific research in the field of AI.

3. The International Conference “SIU Shaping Futures: AI for a Better World” on January 11, 2025

With the motto “SIU Shaping Futures”, the focus of the conference revolves around current global issues such as: Safe and sustainable AI development; Augmented intelligence systems combining natural intelligence and artificial intelligence; Government’s use of AI for best service.
